Chia: The New Super Food

It seems like every year there is a new “hot” super food.  Last year it was the Acai berry and maybe this year it’ll be Chia seeds.  Yup, you remember the commercial, Ch Ch Ch Chia; the same seeds you smeared on your Chia pet may be the newest health craze.  No, they aren’t purposed to grow new hair, but for a tiny seed Chia has a pretty impressive resume.

Athletes' Brains Give Them Edge In Complex Decisionmaking

I have known for a very long time that athletes are better than non-athletes at making quick, complex decisions. I just didn't know why.

New Concussion Rule for High School Wrestling Is A Good Move

Good news on the concussion safety front today from the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Wrestling Rules Committee and the NFHS Board of Directors.  Among the four rule changes it approved for the 2010-2011 season was one requiring that  wrestlers showing signs, symptoms or behaviors consistent with a concussion be removed immediately from the match and not allowed to return to competition until cleared by an appropriate health-care professional.

Sustaining an Injury

On April 22nd at 6:30 p.m. I will participate in a panel discussion in Cambridge, Mass., with our son Todd and Tom Brady's (the quarterback's) dad, possibly his mom.  Our son Todd, along with his older brother, were the subjects of my book published last April entitled, MINOR LEAGUE MOM:  A MOTHER'S JOURNEY THROUGH THE RED SOX FARM TEAMS.   The subject of the discussion will be, "Parenting Elite Athletes."

MLB Pitch, Hit & Run Contest: Girls Softball Division Now Included (Finally!)

Sofball player running basesAs a young girl growing up with three sisters and a dad who was a good enough baseball pitcher to be invited to join the White Sox farm system (just before leaving to fight in the Pacific in WWII), I will never forget the long summer nights of playing baseball in our backyard with all the neighborhood kids. My dad was a favorite with the neighborhood boys.

Up to Moms to Protect Kids From Serious Head Injuries in Football

Hello Everyone, Coach Bobby Hosea here to share some important information with you.

First, I want to congratulate Brooke and her team for re-establishing the name MomsTeam. I can only guess somebody suggested in order to be politically correct that Dads needed to be represented with the former "Parents" something or other name.  The fact of the matter when it comes to children, Moms care more. Dads do care but, Moms care more about the safety and well-being  of their children, especially when it comes to tackle football.

Letting Kids Run Practices Increases Fun, Builds Team Spirit

Girls playing lacrosseOn Saturday, March 27, the world observed the fourth annual Earth Hour, a global event started by the World Wildlife Fund. During Earth Hour, cities, towns and individual families from around the world were encouraged to turn off all non-essential lights from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.  People in more than 92 countries participated in a global call to action for, and to demonstrate the urgency of, climate change.

Metal Bat Ban Urged by California Lawmaker

Yesterday I wrote about the controversy surrounding the use of metal bats and the debate over whether they are safe, particularly in youth baseball.

It now appears that bans against the use of metal bats at the high school level in California are gaining momentum.

NHL Ban on Blindside Hits Deserves Ringing of Cow Bell

If you have been following ice hockey, as I have been this year, you probably know that the sport has a concussion problem, more specifically a head-hunting problem.

New Metal Baseball Bat Commercial Raises Safety Concerns

At this time every year we at MomsTeam get a flood of emails asking the same question: "Why don't they ban metal bats?"

This has been a contentious issue and one which I have been following for years. I have always been on the fence, although leaning in the direction of some common-sense regulation of metal bats to limit the speed at which balls come off the bat.

Ironically, it is a new metal baseball bat commercial that raises safety concerns and has me re-thinking my stance.
