Waltham, MA, June 18, 2013: The Micheli Center for Sports Injury Prevention will be hosting a free screening of the just released documentary, "The Smartest Team," on Wednesday, June 26th at 6:00 p.m. Dr. William P. Meehan, III, Director of The Micheli Center for Sports Injury Prevention, and Brooke deLench, Founder of Moms TEAM, will be on hand after the screening to answer questions parents, coaches and athletes have about the making of the film or about concussions in general.
The film follows a high school football team in Oklahoma during the 2012 season and looks at the steps they are taking to safely manage the growing concussion epidemic. These include reducing the risk of a player receiving a concussion, effectively identifying those players who have received a concussion and safely managing those players after their concussions, to maximize the chances for a safe return to play.
In addition to Dr. Meehan, the film also features Dr. Rosemarie Scolaro Moser, Director of the Sports Concussion Center of New Jersey, Dr. Joseph A. Congeni, Director of the Sports Medicine Center at Akron Children’s Hospital, and Coach Bobby Hosea, developer of the Head Free Tackle ™ method. The film is narrated by two-time Super Bowl winner and Big Ten Network announcer, Howard Griffith.
The Micheli Center offers several services aimed at reducing the risk of concussions, including a Concussion Prevention and Preparation Program, a Return to Play Program, and a drop-in class focused on strengthening the neck, core, and shoulders of athletes. Due to limited space we are asking that parents and players please call 781-373-2760 to reserve their place.
