Expert Wanted
Do you know a kayaking coach in your community you think would be an ideal candidate to be MomsTeam's kayaking expert? Send his or her name to info@momsteam.com.
Helmets
Kayakers, whether in whitewater or calm water, have a tendency to roll over, leaving their heads vulnerable to impacts with rocks or other objects in the water. A solid, well fitting kayak helmet is a must if you or your child is going to hit the river. Many kayak helmets feature internal cradles that stay spaced apart from the outer hard shell, increasing drainage efficiency when waterlogged; most, however, feature a dense foam inner shell for shock absorption. Kayak helmets are also designed to stay firmly on the head, even while submerged in swiftly moving water.
Kayak: Pronunciation:\?k?-?ak\
Traditionally an Inuit canoe made of a frame covered with skins, except for a small opening in the center and propelled by a double-bladed paddle
Kayaking is similar to canoeing, however, a kayak is propelled by using a paddle that has two blades and, unlike canoeists, kayakers sit in a seat on the bottom of the boat, with their legs outstretched in front of them.
Kayaking is a fun recreational activity and sport. Depending on their use, there are five different classes of kayaks available: whitewater, surf, touring/expedition, light touring/ day tripping and recreational. As always, make sure your children wear a life jacket before they step foot into a kayak!
MomsTeam's goal is to provide comprehensive information on kayaking: advice on the equipment needed and how to buy it, a primer on the rules of the sport, and videos and advice from experts, parents, and manufacturers of kayaking gear.
But to do that we are going to need your help. If you are a parent of a child who kayaks or has kyaked, we hope you will share what you have learned with other MomsTeam parents. Please consider writing a blog, contributing an article, posting on and/or hosting a Forum, or becoming a kayaking expert. If you know of someone who used to play or coach kayaking who has knowledge to share, ask him or her to join. Together we can make MomsTeam a true community of sports parents!
