Volleyball can be played by children of all ages and is typically played for the first time recreationally, in the back yard, on the beach with an inflatable ball, or in gym class. In fact, it was originally invented by a gym teacher looking for a fun game his students could play that would develop coordination and conditioning, as well as flexibility and balance. Games can easily be organized and played recreationally, and volleyball can be played on grass, a court, or the beach, making it an ideal family sport as well. Young kids can become familiar with the sport over the course of years before making the decision to play competitively, typically in middle or high school.
